Speed limits to change

Speed limits will soon change for several Whidbey Island roads as the result of ordinances just passed by the Board of Island County Commissioners, following public hearings.

Speed limits will soon change for several Whidbey Island roads as the result of ordinances just passed by the Board of Island County Commissioners, following public hearings.

Other speed limits that were slated to change will remain the same after residents objected, while still others will be subject to further hearings.

On South Whidbey, the changes are as follows:

– A proposal to increase the speed limit on Bayview Road from 35 mph to 40 between State Highway 525 and Ewing Road was defeated. The speed limit will remain unchanged.

– The speed limit along the entire length of Burley Road will be cut to 25 mph, from 50. This change coincides with an upcoming project at the intersection of Burley and Swede Hill Roads.

– The limit on Swede Hill Road will be cut to 25 mph, from 35, from Maxwelton Road to 700 feet south of Burley Road.

– The speed limit on Fox Spit Road will be cut to 35 mph from milepost 0.00 (the intersection with Saratoga Road) to MP 1.11, and to 20 mph from MP 1.11 to MP 1.81.

– The limit on French Road will be cut to 45, from 50, from Maxwelton Road to 950 feet east of Bailey Road.

– The limits on Langley Road will remain unchanged.

– Proposed changes to the limits on Smuggler’s Cove Road will be subject to a future public hearing.
