South Whidbey High School sophomore Chloe Hood has earned a spot in the National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Out Loud regional competition.

Hood scored the highest out of approximately 250 South Whidbey High School students who participated in a school-wide competition Dec. 17. The school competition preceded the regional event, which will be held Feb. 5.

Each of the nine South Whidbey High School English classes held mini competitions in which students recited two poems chosen from over 800 poems on the Poetry Out Loud website. Students were judged based upon accuracy and presentation. The top students proceeded to the school-wide competition.

Conor Workman, Donia Kashkooli and Sarah Parker also received high scores, according to South Whidbey High School English teacher Jaryl Cave.
