A two-car crash Wednesday night sent one woman to Harborview, where she was listed in serious condition in intensive care.

Heather Kelley, 37, was driving south on Highway 525 near the American Legion hall. A truck, driven by 83-year-old Oran Downs of Clinton, pulled out from the driveway to American Legion Post 141. According to the Washington State Patrol report, Downs failed to yield to Kelley, who crashed into the full size pickup truck.

Kelley was trapped in her car for more than 15 minutes as responders from South Whidbey Fire/EMS had to cut the frame of her minivan to extract her. During the removal, Deputy Chief Jon Beck said Kelley was conscious.

A Whidbey General Hospital ambulance drove her to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle because low cloud level prevented an airlift transport.

Downs and his passenger, 61-year-old Eric Woodside of Greenbank, were not injured and refused any medical treatment.

The crash closed off that section of the highway for four hours as the state patrol investigated the scene.
