Whidbey Island mayors all to give up posts

Next year will be a year of transition for Whidbey as all three municipalities will have new mayors.

Following the recent announcements of Langley Mayor Fred McCarthy and Coupeville Mayor Nancy Conard, Oak Harbor Mayor Scott Dudley confirmed Tuesday that he also will not seek re-election this November.

Dudley cited an obstructionist council as the reason for leaving city politics. He’s particularly concerned about the skyrocketing cost estimates of a sewage treatment plant project; he wants the council to reconsider the proposed location at Windjammer Park.

Oak Harbor city councilmen Jim Campbell and Bob Severns are vying for the mayor’s seat.

McCarthy broke the news earlier this month that he would finish out the year, completing the end of former Mayor Larry Kwarsick’s first term, but would not run for re-election because he wants to spend more time with family. So far, no one has publicly announced their plans to seek the mayor’s chair.

Also up for election in Langley are the following city council members: Robin Black, position 2; Jim Sundberg, position 3; and Bruce Allen, position 4.

In Coupeville, Conard will step down after 20 years in office, first as a councilwoman and then as a mayor. Town Councilwoman Molly Hughes is hoping to replace her.
