Island County Grange recently held its annual arts, crafts, photography, and home skills contests and 30 contestants will advance to the state competitions this summer.

Island County Grange recently held its annual arts, crafts, photography, and home skills contests and 30 contestants will advance to the state competitions this summer.

There were 15 winners in the arts, crafts and photography contests. They include:

– Glen Stuart of Whidbey Island won a best of class award for his acrylic representation of playing cards.

– Clinton resident Gary Kay won with his woodworking entry of an 8-foot-long, trifold display board; Bob Carnelia of Camano Island won for his ironwood carved quail and a wooden box.

– Clinton resident Ralph Gorg won with his campfire forks made of recycled golf clubs.

– Judy Prochaska of Greenbank won with her set of greeting cards using string art, and Meena Prochaska of Greenbank won with her white paper cross using the quilling technique.

– Gary Kay won the grange promotional art category with an invitation to the recent Deer Lagoon Open House.

– Chuck Prochaska of Greenbank won in six photography categories including scenic, people, historical, flora, spring and buildings.

In the family living contests, 15 will proceed to state. They include:

– Pat Prochaska for her zucchini/blueberry bread and pecan cookies (she won in two categories); and Pat Major of Camano for her walnut cake.

– Tarey Kay of Clinton won in five food preservation categories with her fruits with rhubarb pie filling, her vegetables with tomatoes, her soft spreads with strawberry jam and her dried vegetables with her onions.

– Tarey Kay won in two needlework categories with her crochet doily and her crochet shawl, while Pat Prochaska won for her Afghan.

– Pat Major of Camano won in three quilting categories for her small quilt, wall hanging and quilted vest.

– Tarey Kay also won in the sewing adult clothing division for her vest.

The Washington State Grange competition this month in Spokane.
