Dorothy R. Barth

Dorothy was born Aug. 27, 1928 in Ashland, Ky. to Charles Herbert and Dorothy Elizabeth Reinartz and died Nov. 16, 2015 at Manor Care of Libertyville, Ill. Dorothy graduated from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio which is also where she met her husband, Paul. From 1998 – 2010 Dorothy lived part-time in Mundelein, Ill. and part-time in Langley in order to spend time on the island with her three grandchildren. She enjoyed being able to attend many of their recitals, school concerts, plays, dance performances and sports events.

Dorothy was a charter member, one of 40 women in 1959, to form the Mundelein-Libertyville chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She was also an active member of the Whidbey Island chapter of AAUW who gave her a lifetime achievement award. She was a public school teacher in Illinois and demonstrated a lifelong dedication to teaching by volunteering as a docent and tour guide for several historic sites.

When on Whidbey she volunteered at the AAUW student Showcase for the Arts, Whidbey Dance Theater’s Nutcracker, Whidbey Island Center for the Arts and the office at the Langley United Methodist Church. She was a member of both the Oak Harbor and Freeland Friends of the Library.

Dorothy is survived by her children Joseph Barth, Elizabeth “Betsy” (Paul) Arand, her siblings Stanley (Barbara) Reinartz, Paulina (Rev. Richard) Wendt and her grandchildren Mark, Amy and Rachael Arand. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul.

A service of remembrance and interment will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 27 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeland. Memorials may be sent to AAUW Whidbey Island, P.O. Box 1332, Coupeville, WA 98239.
