Marina expansion welcomed | LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:
I just came back from meeting with the Assistant Harbormaster Duncan McPhee today. It is a pleasure to have had the courteous, professional help the last two years from Duncan and Rick Brewer, the Langley Marina Harbormaster.
Annually, around the end March, the boating club I’m involved with, Seattle Singles Yacht Club, visits Langley in order to possibly sight some of the gray whales that feed here at this time of year. And yes, we do stay 100 yards away from these awesome mammals!
This year we have 20 boats over 30 feet in length trying to fit into the limited spaces available. Since there are already a number of boats moored at the marina through the winter, spaces are extremely limited. I jokingly call this annual visit of our boats “organized chaos.”
Hopefully, next year, after the marina has been expanded, much more docking space will be available. Duncan told me that last summer many boats had to be turned away. The 70 to 80 boating yacht club members that will visit Langley over the March 31 weekend will undoubtedly give a nice financial boost to local businesses.
Thanks to the Port of South Whidbey proposed expansion of the marina this summer, more of the our Puget Sound boating community will soon be able to visit “The Village by the Sea!”
