To the editor:

In a poll taken of voting members attending the Island County Republican Party Central Committee meeting, the overwhelming majority voted to oppose Proposition 1: property tax increase.

Businesses are closing because people on the island are losing their jobs and are spending less in order to preserve what they have. Foreclosures are increasing. Fewer donations are going to those whose mission is to aid people in difficult times. Property tax increases will result in less money in the private sector to create new jobs as spending continues to decrease by families and individuals.

Our citizens are concerned about the various taxing districts proposing tax increases ,as well as the uncertainty of what taxes will be raised at the state and federal levels. This tax increase, along with state and federal tax increases destined to occur year after year, will prolong the recession in our island economy as well as in the entire state.

The county needs to live within its budget and do as many individuals are being forced to do.

Bill Carruthers

Chairman

Island County Republican Party
