To the editor:

Recent articles in the South Whidbey Record, postings on this newspaper’s online blog, and private e-mails have been filled with facts and rumors, anger and angst about how Langley’s elected officials have been conducting the city’s internal business and managing the taxpayers’ money.

These written words have been echoed in many conversations around town.

For a number of more-outspoken citizens, the controversy, the lack of confidence and the outright distrust has grown to the point where some are writing and talking about various petitions — including one to recall most of our municipal representatives.

This situation is clearly not healthy for our city.

We citizens need to have trust and confidence in our elected leaders. We need to be certain of the facts behind this controversy.

One established way to determine the facts is to have a formal review conducted by the Washington State Auditor. If all has been as it should be, then our elected officials will be vindicated.

If not ....

As it is their duty to do what is in the best interests of the citizens of Langley, I urge the mayor and all the members of the city council to call for such a state audit today so we may end this time of uncertainty and get about the business of building our community.
