To the editor:

With all due respect to Vanetta Turner (letter, South Whidbey Record, Jan. 15) and her warnings about irresponsible use of alcohol, I’d like to come to the defense of the Heisings for opening Whidbey Island Distillery.

My grandmother was a member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and I still have her WCTU songbook. But I also applaud Steve and Bev for their dealing with the “mountain of paperwork” to start this new business, which will bring employment to South Whidbey. I’m sure they’ll have to check ID carefully so they won’t sell to minors. They’ll probably have inspectors making sure they’re following the rules. In the tasting room, they’ll make sure nobody tastes too much. I remember purchasing Whidbey’s Liqueur, which made a lovely topping for ice cream, as well as a gift for out-of-town guests.

As adults, we have to be careful not to serve any alcohol to recovering addicts, and as parents we need to teach children about the dangers of driving under the influence. But I am glad we’re going to have a local alternative to the international corporations, and I like the fact that the Heisings are growing some of their own berries and grapes, and recycling wine from local vineyards.

I’m looking forward to flavoring my pumpkin pies with local brandy.
