To the editor:

Today we put our kindergartner on the school bus, as usual. The driver always smiles and says good morning to her by name, just like he does with her older sister who attends the middle school.

We have read many articles in your paper about our troubled public school system and the very large challenges we as a district face in times of change, declining enrollment and financial strain. Despite these continuing uphill battles, our teachers remain standing on the front lines of our children’s educations and futures.

Every school day, our daughters receive a gift in the form of talented, nationally recognized educators who have dedicated their professional lives to teaching kids. These teachers endure larger class sizes, fewer materials to work with and the usual crappy pay, yet they continue to fight the good fight in our classrooms and schools.

To all of South Whidbey’s teachers, bus drivers, para-educators, support staff and office staff: thank you. Thanks for believing in our kids and teaching in this district.

You make a difference in our world every day.

Teresa and Jim Forsyth
