To the editor:

Bless Hearts & Hammers! They have opened up my life.

At age 101, my sight, hearing and walking have deteriorated. Inside my one-story house, I can move around with only a cane. However, when I had to leave the house, I found it very difficult to go down the three steep steps from my porch to ground level. So, except for necessary trips like going to the doctor, it became easier to stay home than to go down those steps.

All that changed on Saturday, May 7, when a crew from Hearts & Hammers built a gently sloping ramp from porch to ground level. The handrails on each side make it easy to reach the driveway to get into a car.  On the next night, when family members invited me to join them for one of my favorites — a

French dip sandwich at Neil’s Clover Patch — I didn’t hesitate to say yes. I look forward to many more outings.
