LETTERS TO THE EDITOR | Thanks for help with the homeless
To the editor:
I want to thank all the generous people at the Coupeville Farmers Market for your donations these past five weeks. Your support and generosity helped me reach my goal of raising $500 to help Coupeville kids, kindergarten through grade eight, who are in transition (homeless). With your help I made my goal in just five weeks.
I also want to give a big thank you to Mike Pearson, manager of Red Apple Prairie Market, for the store’s generous donation of $100 in Red Apple gift certificates. Your contribution brought the total raised to $600.
My hope is that more people are aware of this problem in our community, that they will continue to support the wonderful efforts of Mary Mitchell and the others at the Readiness to Learn Foundation (678-4552 ext. 236) who provide support and services for homeless families on Whidbey Island. As we all learned from the information she gave me for my poster, there are over 70 homeless kids in Coupeville alone, and over 400 all together on the island.
I would also like to thank Peg Tennant, manager of the Coupeville Farmers Market, for letting me and my brother play our violins Saturdays at the market so that I could raise the money necessary to complete this project, and thanks to my sensei, Wendi Barker of Tiger Martial Arts, for her inspiration and encouragement.
