LETTERS TO THE EDITOR | Cell towers pose safety issues

December 4, 2012 · Updated 2:30 PM

To the editor:

Please review the links to information I have sent regarding your decision to lease a cell tower site to AT&T along the Dorothy Cleveland Trail.

The proposed AT&T tower sites are too close to the Dorothy Cleveland Trail and neighboring houses.

There are very real safety issues with AT&T towers, and the subcontractors AT&T is known to hire. AT&T passes off liability to these subcontractors. How much liability is the Port of South Whidbey willing to shoulder if any Whidbey resident or visitor is harmed in any way by the proposed tower? The port cannot guarantee the health and safety of visitors and residents close to this tower site. It is in a public park! The very real health issues of extended exposure to cell tower emissions need to be addressed at the Dec. 11 meeting.

The port has no right to gamble with our health and cannot definitively state to us that we nearby residents are safe from extended exposure to cell tower emissions.
