Falcons come up short in 7-2 heartbreaker

It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Falcon baseball team on Wednesday as it dropped an 11-inning marathon game to the Sultan Turks 7-2.

It was a pitching duel for 10 innings. Jack Lewis led the Falcons on the mound for eight innings and allowed two unearned runs. Lewis was aided by the Falcons defense, which converted two double plays.

Sultan got on the board first with a run in the second inning. The Falcons rallied in the bottom of the third to tie the game 1-1 as Taylor Todd advanced to first base on a walk. Todd moved to third base on a steal and a passed ball, and then   scored on another passed ball.

In the fifth, Sultan picked up its second unearned run with a lead-off base hit, a stolen base and a Falcon error.

Again, the Falcons responded in the bottom of the sixth with Lewis’ lead-off double, who then scored on a Zeke Spalding single to center field. Lewis was 2-for-5 with two doubles.

In the top of the 11th inning, four infield hits barely escaped the Falcon fielders with the bases loaded. The Turks scored five runs, while the Falcons failed to score.
