Anglers can soon sign up for the competition to hook the greatest humpies during the Whidbey Island Pink Salmon Derby.

The salmon derby is Saturday, Aug. 20 in the waters around Whidbey Island.

Hopeful fishers can pre-register from Aug. 1 to Aug. 19 at Ace Hardware in Freeland. Derby fees are $7 for adults and $3 for youths 12 years old and younger.

Prizes will be awarded for the three biggest pinks by weight for the adults and young anglers categories. The weigh-in site is at Ace Hardware, 1609 E. Main St., Freeland, between noon and 4 p.m. Aug. 20. All entrants must be in line by 4 p.m.

A prize ceremony and a raffle will follow the weigh-ins at about 4:15 p.m.

Last year, about 200 people registered and 80 fish were weighed, organizers said.

Proceeds go to the Fishin’ Club’s annual college scholarship fund.
