South Whidbey High School tennis ace Lindsey Newman won the 2A state tennis championship Saturday for the second year in a row, beating arch-rival Erica Bosman from Lynden in three sets — 6-4, 3-6 and 6-3.

"Erica had improved physically and, more important, mentally from last year's final match," Falcon coach Tom Kramer said. "But Lindsey kept her off-balance, veering her shots and playing an outstanding game. She just went out and beat her."

Overall, the South Whidbey girl's team placed third of 19 schools with 12 points, behind Lynden with 19 points and Ellensburg with 13.

Falcon freshman Riley Newman, Lindsey's brother, faced the eventual state boys champion, Richard Muszynski of Clarkston, in the first round. Newman lost 5-7, 6-4 and 6-3 but never lost another game and placed fourth overall.

Both Newmans will be back next year.
