Jenny Saephan guns for the 2A doubles championship at the state tennis meet in May with partner Kylie Bozym. Saephan will return to the Falcon lineup next spring to either defend her championship or to cover new ground as a singles player.

It may be that more champion athletes emerged on South Whidbey in 2001 than in any previous year.

At South Whidbey High School, five boys and three girls earned places at the top of the podium in track and field, tennis and wrestling. At the Whidbey Island Triathlon, a defending champion added to his mystique as an endurance athlete by finishing the race in a time that seemed impossible. On the streets of Seattle, a Langley man in his first marathon placed in the top 10 to establish himself as one of the best Whidbey Island runners ever.

January

The South Whidbey High School wrestling team wins its first tournament ever at the Sky Valley Invitational. Bruce Hymas, Brandon Hern and Chris Hezel all win matches to lead the team.
