South Whidbey boys golfers fall behind at area Dolan Invitational

A playoff putt decided the medalist at the Dolan Invitational boys golf tournament.

Then 20 strokes higher is South Whidbey’s top finisher. A challenging season continued for the Falcons, who have failed to break under 80 strokes in a full round this season.

Derrick Riley finished first among his teammates with 93 strokes.

The loaded field featured golfers from 24 teams representing the Cascade Conference and Wesco. South Whidbey finished 22nd as a team at the Everett Golf and Country Club.

Evan Merculief shot a 97; Daniel Caron a 100; Jordan Hoch a 104; and Jon Rasmussen, who began the season as the Falcons’ top golfer, shot a 125.

Jackson’s Kyle Cornett was the tournament’s top golfer with 73 strokes, one over par, after winning the playoff hole. Kamiak was the top team with 309 combined strokes through its top five golfers.

South Whidbey has won only one head-to-head meet this season, a road contest against Lakewood. The team faces Lakewood again on its home course at Useless Bay Golf and Country Club on Monday, April 22.
