Falcon baseball drops pair of one-run games
Fighting to finish with a .500 record, South Whidbey baseball suffered a blow to its chances with a pair of one-run losses this week.
The Falcons lost 5-4 to Cedarcrest on Tuesday and 4-3 to Granite Falls on Wednesday.
Regardless, South Whidbey owns its best record in years. Last season, the Falcons finished with only two wins. Now the Falcons are tied for fourth place with Granite Falls at 6-10 in Cascade Conference games.
Against Cedarcrest (13-3 conference; 13-5 overall), South Whidbey held a 4-2 lead going into the seventh inning. Brent Piehler relieved starting pitcher Colton Sterba and allowed the go-ahead runs in the loss.
Facing the Tigers, Piehler pitched the complete game. After a rough third inning, Piehler held Granite Falls scoreless on the road. South Whidbey staged a three-run rally that fell short in the fifth.
