South Whidbey Record

Trio of Falcons make all-league in fastpitch

June 6, 2013 · Updated 1:48 PM

South Whidbey again put three Falcons from its fastpitch squad on the second team all-Cascade Conference.

Last year, Alex Kubeska, Chantel Brown and Makenzie Hezel were on the list. This year, Kubeska, Brown and senior Ellie Greene were voted as some of the top players in the league.

Kubeska, a senior, missed several games early in the season. She returned, and not a moment too soon, to relieve Hezel, a junior, as the Falcons’ one-two pitching punch. She also controlled the left infield as a third baseman.

Brown, a versatile player and the Falcons’ second hitter, also made the all-league ranks. The junior played catcher, third base and left field, for which the latter she was voted all-conference.

Greene, in only her second season on the softball team, was voted an all-league center fielder. She frequently batted as a power hitter for South Whidbey in the middle of the lineup.

South Whidbey finished at the bottom of the conference standings with a 3-15 league record and 4-17 overall. The Falcons did, however, win their first playoff game in several years 8-6 against Friday Harbor in the 1A District 1 playoffs.

Voting is conducted by league coaches and the top 12 vote recipients are named to the first team. Also an offensive and defensive player of the year is selected, which were awarded to Lakewood’s Kiana Smith and Cedarcrest’s Taylor Turner, respectively. No Falcons made the league’s first team.
