It wouldnt be accurate to say winning the 2003 South Whidbey High School Powder Puff championship was harder than it looked because it looked pretty tough.
Playing in a downpour Wednesday night, four talented teams of girls played a short football tournament with a flag-football format. At stake was honor, especially for the senior class.
After the seniors beat the sophomores and the juniors beat the freshmen in the nights two opening games, the two upperclass teams met in a muddy showdown. The juniors powered by ballet dancer turned runningback Caitlin Candelario seemed to be the team to beat, right until the final three seconds of the barely officiated and loosely scored game. Candelario scored three touchdowns in the 20-minute game to give her team a late lead.
But in the final seconds, senior quarterback Katy McGillen took the ball on the run, got past the junior defense and won the game for the Class of 2003.
Points assigned to the senior class for the victory will go toward its total score in this weeks homecoming class competition.
