Junior varsity wrestlers place high in Arlington tourney

With a meet to themselves Saturday, South Whidbey High School’s small junior varsity wrestling team finally got some action after being left out earlier in the week.

Owing to the fact that Granite Falls did not bring a JV squad to South Whidbey for a North Cascades Conference dual meet last Friday, the Falcon JV team was well rested and ready to do some damage the next day at a junior varsity tournament in Arlington. Doing the most was Falcon Justin Hayworth, who earned a championship by pinning three opponents on his way to dominating the tournament’s heavyweight division.

Also making a dent in a heavy weight class was 189-pound Justin Campbell who, despite an early round loss, came back to pin his Mount Vernon opponent in a consolation final to place third. Junior Falcon Matt Errico also made consolation champion, putting down his last opponent 7-0 in a perfect decision at 160 pounds.

Other South Whidbey wrestlers making it into the top four in the tournament were senior Keith Ryder and junior Tyler Bobinac. Both wrestled at 152 pounds and tied four fourth.

Also wrestling for the team but not placing was freshman Jorge Flores.

Junior varsity tournaments are not scored, so the Falcons did not receive a team placing. The junior varsity team wrestles next on Friday against Sultan. The meet will be the second and last at Erikson Gymnasium for the Falcons this season.
