Frosh-sophs carry the day at Holder Relays

The future looks bright for South Whidbey High School track and field.

At the annual Holder Relays held in Yakima Saturday, Falcon freshmen and sophomores distinguished themselves against some of the best competition in the state, making big performances in the sprints, middle distance events, and in the field.

At the same time, varsity relays and a few individuals also came clear of the pack at Eisenhower High School’s track, showing that the team is on track to put up a tough fight in championship meets.

The stars of the day were the frosh/soph South Whidbey girls. Two freshmen — Erica Johnson and Lauren Sandri — split three individual event championships between them, while several other girls were runners-up or shared in runner-up relay victories.

Sandri was the big winner, taking the 100 by a huge margin of .34 seconds, then conquered her nearest rivals in the long jump by nearly a foot. She also ran the second leg of the Falcons’ 4x100 team, racing with teammates Johnson, Annie Doran, and Madeline Churchill to second place a lean behind a team from Selah High School.

Johnson was an individual winner in the open 400, gapping teammate and event runner-up Doran by 7 seconds. In the 800, Johnson showed her versatility by running to a second-place finish in the 800, clocking a time of 2:31.9 behind winner Erin Meehan of Abbotsford.

Also placing well for the frosh/soph girls was freshman Marijane Daumen, a third-place finisher in the long jump at 12 feet, 9 inches.

In the varsity races, the Falcons didn’t have any winners, but they came close. The 4x200 team of Sarah Olson, Nancy Godsey, Katherine East and Hope Richards flew to a second-place finish behind West Valley, even with distance runner Godsey filling in for the fleeter-of-foot Sandri. The top individual placing on the day was East’s, a third-place sprint in the 400 that brought her across the line just .64 seconds behind winner Angela Shaw of Abbotsford.

Top results for the Falcon boys were few. Sophomore Jason Fitz carried the banner for his team in the varsity competition, placing fifth in the 300 hurdles, then popping off an 18 foot, 1 inch long jump to take second behind Geordan Newbill of Garfield High School.

Also placing well for South Whidbey was senior Jason Gilberts, a 152-3 sixth place in the javelin.
