Saturday was a perfect day for soccer: light winds, cool and sunny.

Well, perfect for the Falcon girls’ soccer team, anyway — they beat Meridian 3-1 with a style of hard, physical contact and balanced attack that kept their opponents on the wrong side of the field most of the game.

Nicole Falso ended the scoreless first half as she slammed the ball past Meridian’s goalie with 2:39 left. After licking their wounds during the break, Meridian came out firing when Anna Tensing slammed one past goalie Amelia Cave with 36:02 remaining.

It seemed to the casual onlooker that some degree of intensity had gone out of the Falcons. Not so fast: Karissa Thomas edged the Falcons ahead two minutes later with a slasher kick that dropped into the Trojan goal.

With only 60 seconds on the clock, Grace Itaya capped a spirited drive for the Falcons’ final point.

Thursday, the girls welcome La Conner to Waterman Field, 6 p.m.
