South Whidbey’s girls basketball team suffered a stinging 42-27 defeat to island rival Coupeville on Tuesday night.

The loss bumped the Falcons to third place among the three 1A teams in the Cascade Conference. Only the top two advance to the District 1 playoffs in February, and South Whidbey lost to King’s earlier this season.

Off the heels of their first win, the Falcons couldn’t keep pace with the Wolves in the middle of the game. Coupeville burst forth from an 8-7 lead at the end of the first quarter for a 22-11 lead by halftime. Wolf senior Makana Stone led all scorers with 16 points and was aided by Madeline Strasburg, who scored nine points.

More than offense, however, the Wolves’ defense flustered the Falcons into turnovers and contested shots, especially in the second and third quarters. Through those periods, South Whidbey mustered only nine points.

As the Falcons fell, the Wolves ran away with the lead, dropping 13 points in the third quarter for a 35-16 advantage. South Whidbey played without its only senior, Madi Boyd, who missed the game because of an illness. Pressuring the Falcons without one of their go-to players who can push the ball up the court against a press defense, the Wolves found success in transition points.

Coupeville (2-1 Cascade Conference, 3-2 overall) struggled with its free-throw shooting, making five of 16 trips to the line.

Falcon freshman Kacie Hanson led South Whidbey with nine points. Junior Abby Hodson chipped in eight, and freshman Kinsey Eager scored six.
