Falcon girls finish an upbeat tennis season

The South Whidbey tennis team swept Burlington 7-0 Monday to end the regular season.

Falcon Lindsey Newman won 6-1, 6-0; Natalie Wheeler won-6-2, 6-0; Maya Hough won 6-2, 6-2 and Ana Weeks won 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles action, Victoria Comfort and Nicole Zalewski won 6-2, 6-4; Shannon Craig and Julia Iversen won 6-3,

6-0 and Jenn Gemkow and Katie Holt won 6-0, 6-2.

South Whidbey’s final regular season record is 13-2.

“It really was a nice way to end the regular season, with a focused effort by the entire team,” said Falcon coach Tom Kramer. “My congratulations to the girls for a consistent effort all year.”

Newman was undefeated in singles for the season while Comfort and Zalewski were undefeated doubles partners. Wheeler, Craig, Iversen, Gemkow and Holt had two losses or fewer for the year.

District tennis begins on Saturday, May 16 at Sehome. Individuals need to finish in the top four to qualify in singles or doubles; 60 athletes from the Cascade and Northwest leagues will be competing for those spots.
