Lakewood edged South Whidbey in a squeaker late last week in Marysville, 70-66.

The Cougars crept back into the game after the contest was tied 13-all at the end of the first quarter, then Lakewood leaped to an eight-point advantage by the end of the second quarter, 35-27.

South Whidbey came out blazing in the second half — the Falcons’ Riley Newman torched the net for a game-high 32 points — and the team closed the gap to one point by the start of the fourth, 53-52.

The Cougars outpaced the Falcons 17-14 in the final quarter to preserve the win.

Newman scored three of the game’s 10 three-pointers. Jordan Thornley knocked down 14 points for the Falcons, Harrison Price contributed eight points and Cole Erikson added five.
