Tennis: South Whidbey girls overcome Lakewood

The Falcon girls tennis team beat Lakewood 6-1 Friday.

“Lakewood had an improved singles group this year and played tough tennis in the top three singles,” said Falcon coach Tom Kramer. “We definitely had our hands full.”

Kramer added that Lakewood was much improved over last year and the singles girls got a good workout, helping identify weaknesses that need fixing as the season continues.

In singles action, Hayley Newman won 6-3, 6-7 and 6-2 for the Falcons. Reilly O’Sullivan won 6-4, 6-7 and 7-6. Lena Nichols won 6-0, 6-0 and Kalie Stayskal lost 6-4, 5-7 and 5-7.

In doubles, South Whidbey’s Shannon Craig and Julia Iversen won 6-1, 6-0; Katie Holt and Alexa Brewster won 6-1, 6-2 and Teagen Nielsen and Bayley Heggenes won 6-1, 6-0.

At 2:45 p.m. today, the girls host Lynden, then at 2:45 p.m. Thursday they welcome Coupeville to the high school courts.
