Triathlon open for registration

The Whidbey Island Triathlon — arguably the biggest athletic event of the year on the South End — will be held on Saturday, Aug. 7 and the parks district is encouraging athletes to sign up early.
The scenic course starts with a half-mile swim in Goss Lake. Following the first transition, the bike course features a 19.5-mile ride over paved county roads. The bike course is hilly, with views of Saratoga Passage and the North Cascades. The triathlon ends with a 3.8-mile run through forest trails and on country roads at South Whidbey Community Park.
“This is a great first triathlon for beginners or a fun event for veteran triathletes,” said parks program director Carrie Monforte. “This event has limited space and has filled up with a wait list the past three years, so register early.”
Monforte recommended that those new to triathlons should consider inviting a couple of friends to form a relay team.
“Or sign up for our open-water swim clinics or the ‘Mini Mock Tri’ and learn about open-water swimming and transitions,” she said.
The race fee for individuals is $70 through Aug. 5. The team fee is $140.
