After loss to CPC, Falcons recover to club Chimacum / Boys basketball

Kody Newman was one assist short of a triple-double as the South Whidbey High School boys basketball team won 66-43 at Chimacum in a non-league game Saturday, Jan. 12.

The win took some of the sting out of a 55-53 loss at Cedar Park Christian Friday in Bothell.

South Whidbey played both games without an injured Carson Wrightson, the Falcons’ No. 2 scorer and top rebounder.

The Falcons (2-2, 9-5) play two North Sound Conference away games week. First up is trip to Granite Falls (0-5, 2-12) at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15. Then South Whidbey heads up the island to face rival Coupeville (1-3, 2-9) at 6:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18.

Buck scored with 19 seconds left to give the Falcons a 53-52 lead, but the Eagles converted two free throws seconds later to take the lead. After a turnover, South Whidbey fouled again and CPC hit a final foul shot to finish the scoring.

The loss came after a strong Falcon comeback. South Whidbey trailed by double digits much of the game as the Eagles when up 19-7 and 34-20 after the first two quarters.

Cedar Park Christian’s Luke Allen scored 17 points in the first half, including five three-pointers, and Trenton Lynch added 7.

In the second half, South Whidbey coach Mike Washington switched his club to a diamond-and-two defense, manning up of Allen and Lynch. The strategy limited the pair to 7 second-half points and allowed the Falcons to get back in the game.

South Whidbey outscored the Eagles 14-6 in the third quarter and trailed 40-34 going into the fourth period.

Newman (11 points) and Buck (5) led the fourth-quarter comeback.

Newman finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Jokinen and Buck scored 9 points, Young 7, Patton 5 and Wyatt De Mers 2.
