Cougars capture league titles / Middle school cross country

The South Whidbey Middle School girls and boys cross country teams both claimed titles at the Cascade Conference championships Wednesday, Oct. 17, at South Whidbey High School.

The Cougar girls nearly earned a perfect score, taking five of the top six spots in the 1.7-mile race and earning 19 points.

King’s tallied 56, Coupeville 75 and Lakewood 85.

South Whidbey eighth-grader Madeline Racicot won the girls race in 11:20.26, nearly 35 seconds ahead King’s Sawyer Whiting.

In the boys race, South Whidbey scored 37 points to top King’s (56), Northshore Christian Academy (60), Lakewood (103), Coupeville (107), Sultan (182) and Granite Falls (203).

South Whidbey eighth-graders Nicholas Muller (10:36.37) and Emmett Layman (10:329.07) finished 1-2.

“South Whidbey enjoys hosting the championship meet, and we could not ask for nicer weather or a better turn out of supporters,” coach Patricia Maddux said. “All the athletes were excited, and everyone ran hard. It is always a fantastic sight when all the teams cheer each other on and enjoy the experience. As we say on our team, ‘The runners found the fun in the run.’”
