For the first time this season, both the boys and girls track-and-field teams of South Whidbey claimed first place.

In a dual meet with Coupeville, the final of the regular season for both teams, South Whidbey’s boys team won 59-56 and the girls team won 71-46. The Falcon boys claimed 16 first places and the girls team 10.

Emily Martin, a Falcon senior distance runner, finished third in the 100-meter in 13.78 seconds.

It was the first time Martin raced in the 100. She also won the 400-meter dash with her career-best time of 1 minute, 3.83 seconds that passed her previous record by more than one second.

Martin began pole vaulting last season and won the pole vault with a clearance of 6 feet, 6 inches. The competition was slim — the only other pole vaulter was teammate Lillianna Stelling, and she scratched on three attempts to clear the opening mark.

Stelling, a sophomore distance runner, won the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 33.59 seconds. It was her second-best time of the season.

Angelina Berger, sophomore thrower, swept the shot put, discus and javelin. A week after setting the shot put record, Berger had her second-best mark of the season at 35 feet, 5.25 inches (3 inches short of her record). Her throws in the discus of 101 feet, 6 inches and in the javelin of 110 feet, 7 inches, won first place.

Fellow thrower senior Kelsey Engstrom placed in the shot put and the discus. She won third place in the shot put with a throw of

31 feet, 4 inches and second in the discus at 79 feet, 2 inches. Engstrom set her personal record in the javelin at 86 feet, 11 inches and finished in fourth place.

Sylvie Kaul-Anderson, senior hurdler, placed second in the 100-meter hurdles. She set her season’s best time of 17.78 seconds. Kaul Anderson also won the 300-meter hurdles in 53.97 seconds, also a season’s best.

Nora Felt, a sophomore distance runner, won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 41.30 seconds—her season’s best time. Taya Jae, a junior, placed third in the 800 in 2 minutes, 58 seconds.

The Falcon boys team was led by Will Hallberg. He returned to the sprint events and won the 100-meter dash in 11.10 second. He previously did not race in any events other than the long and triple jumps this season. Steven Sutton, a junior, finished third in 12.10 seconds.

Hallberg won the long jump at 20 feet, 5 inches — his first jump under 21 feet since the first conference meet on March 24. The triple jump was not opened for the meet.

Cooper Nichols and Andy Madsen won uncontested in the high jump and pole vault, respectively. Nichols cleared 5 feet and Madsen cleared 10 feet.

South Whidbey boys swept the javelin. Madsen won the javelin with a throw of 126 feet, 10 inches. Colton Justus finished in second place at 113 feet, 10 inches and Seth Eckert finished in third place at 109 feet, 10 inches. Nick French, the Falcons’ top javelin thrower, scratched out of the event.

Justus also placed second in the shot put at 35 feet, 0.5 inches. Eckert placed third in the shot put (34 feet) and also the discus (89 feet, 5 inches).

Ben Saari, senior distance runner, finished second in the 3,200-meter run in 10 minutes, 53.76 seconds — his career best time. In his first 400-meter race, Saari finished third in 59.54 seconds.
