Falcons to play CPC for league pennant / Baseball

After 19 games, it comes down to one.

South Whidbey High School and Cedar Park Christian will play for the North Sound Conference championship in the regular-season finale at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Marymoor Park.

The Falcons set up the title showdown by beating the visiting Eagles 3-0 Wednesday, April 24.

South Whidbey came into the week having to sweep the three-game series to collect the crown. It beat Cedar Park Christian 3-0 in the opener Monday, then repeated the score Wednesday.

Both teams have 12-2 conference records. South Whidbey is 17-2 overall, CPC 16-3.

Jon Bartel pitched a two-hit shutout with four strikeouts, one walk an one hit batter.

The Eagles did not have a runner in scoring position until the seventh when, with two outs, a batter was hit by a pitch followed by a base hit. A fly ball ended the threat.

The Falcons scored in the first inning when Alex Black led off with a single, was bunted up by Drew Fry and scored on Kody Newman’s base hit.

South Whidbey did not have another base runner until the fifth inning when it loaded the bases with one out only to have the rally snuffed by a double play.

The Falcons recovered to score twice in the sixth inning.

With two outs, consecutive hits by Newman, Brent Batchelor and Bartel resulted in two runs.

Nick Black and Luke Rookstool also had base hits in the game for the Falcons.
