Improved Eagles are no match for Falcons / Soccer

The South Whidbey High School soccer team, with the help of a hat trick by Graham Colar, put a dent in the new version of Cedar Park Christian-Bothell soccer.

The Falcons clipped the Eagles 6-1 Tuesday, March 27, at CPC.

After going winless last year, Cedar Park Christian bounced back to win three of its first four matches this season.

South Whidbey stopped some of that momentum by thrashing the Eagles behind Colar’s big day.

“Our game went well versus a much improved Cedar Park Christian team,” South Whidbey coach Emerson Robbins said. “A very well played game by most all on our team.”

Midfielder Nevin Daniel, playing his first match this spring, started the scoring off a header from a cross by Colar.

Striker Michael Lux netted the next goal on a breakaway set up by a long pass from Lake Smith. Lux raced by the defensive line and put a grounder into the corner of the net.

Colar dribbled up the left side by several Eagle defenders to pick up his first goal, giving the Falcons a 3-0 half time lead.

Colar wasted little time after the break, striking early with an assist from Lux.

Cedar Park Christian then scored its lone goal.

Lux answered. With his back to the goal, he spun and booted a rocket into the far corner to make it 5-1.

Colar then completed his hat trick and Robbins cleared his bench.

“We were able to play some of the freshmen who don’t often get a lot of playing time,” Robbins said.

The offensive explosion was aided by a strong defensive effort, according to Robbins.

“(Andrew Curtis) was a bulldog in the middle and won a lot of balls centrally, then distributed well,” Robbins said. “We wouldn’t stand much of a chance in any game without our senior star center backs Lake Smith and Ari Rohan. They often look like men versus boys out there.”

South Whidbey (1-2, 2-2-1) hosts Granite Falls (0-2, 1-4) at 6 p.m. Friday, March 30.
