Sign-ups under way for youth basketball

Registration is open for the upcoming South Whidbey Park and Recreation District youth basketball program.

Boys and girls in grades 1-6 are eligible for the local recreational youth league, while boys in grades 7 and 8 can join a more competitive traveling team. Girls had an opportunity to play on a traveling team this fall.

The deadline for registration is Sunday, Dec. 2. Need-based scholarships are available; please apply by Thursday, Nov. 29.

The recreational league offers a chance for kids to experience the sport and refine their skills. All participants play at least two quarters in every game. A mandatory skills assessment is set for Saturday, Dec. 8. The season begins in January, and the fee is $85.

The traveling team will compete in the SWISH (Skagit, Whatcom, Island, Snohomish Hoops) League. Practices will be in South Whidbey, but the games will be played in Skagit County. The fee is $190.

Volunteers are needed to coach or help assist in the operation of the league and should apply by Monday, Nov. 26.

The program is also in need of team sponsors; local businesses that support youth athletics help defray the cost of the league.
