South Whidbey beats Wolves, aims to wrap up title Wednesday / Soccer

Don’t criticize the South Whidbey High School soccer team for being greedy. The Falcons do not want to share the North Sound Conference crown with King’s.

South Whidbey (9-0, 13-0-1) and the Knights (8-1, 11-4) meet in Shoreline at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the regular-season finale. If the Falcons win, they claim the conference title outright. A loss, and King’s earns a share of the title.

South Whidbey beat King’s 2-0 Oct. 3 in Langley. That was the Falcons’ second consecutive win over the Knights after dropping 19 in a row. South Whidbey has never beaten King’s on the Knights’ turf.

Regardless of the outcome, South Whidbey will advance to the double-elimination portion of the district tournament, which begins Monday, Oct. 28. However, the outcome will determine where and who the Falcons play in the opening round.

South Whidbey 4, Coupeville 0

The Falcons celebrated Senior Night with a shutout win over the Wolves (1-8, 1-11-2).

Heavy rain throughout made footing difficult, and the Falcons adjusted to the conditions and Coupeville’s trapping defense to remain undefeated in conference play.

The match was scoreless for the first 25 minutes, and then South Whidbey exploded for three goals before halftime.

Elizabeth Haines tallied the opening goal off Ashton Helseth’s corner kick.

Simone White followed by scoring twice in 10 minutes. Haines’ header assist led to White’s first goal, then White added an unassisted goal.

In the second half, Mikenna Wicher scored on a rebound from a shot by Mallory Drye.

“It was a special night recognizing our seniors at half time, and we ended the final eight minutes with all seniors playing on the field,” coach Terry Swanson said.
