South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District hosts pro sports camps

Former South Whidbey soccer star Joseph Supang will bring his pro soccer skills back to Whidbey Island in the Supang Skill Training soccer camp. A baseball camp for youths 8 to13 years old is for all players, from the aspiring to the elite. The camp will be at South Whidbey Community Park Baseball Field 1 Aug. 8-11.

Supang soccer camp comes to South End

Former South Whidbey soccer star Joseph Supang will bring his pro soccer skills back to Whidbey Island in the Supang Skill Training soccer camp.

The camp costs $120 and runs from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday, June 27 to Friday, July 1 at the South Whidbey Sports Complex on Langley Road.

Players ages 8 to 18 will learn the importance of developing good fundamentals and technique, an excellent work ethic and a strong level of commitment.

This clinic provides serious players the opportunity to improve their individual skills while offering a competitive and enjoyable environment. Skills covered include individuals first touch (dribbling, receiving, turning under pressure, passing); attacking (crossing and finishing, one-on-ones, games to goal); and defending (one-on-one defending, group defending, heading).

Supang was a member of the Seattle University men’s soccer team, a professional player in Belgium and member of the Botswana National Team.

He was the leading scorer for the 2000 Falcon boys soccer team that placed second in the state tournament. He was also a forward for the 2004 national champion Seattle University men’s soccer team.

Each player receives a T-shirt and personal instruction. Each player should bring a soccer ball, water and appropriate footwear/clothing.

Baseball clinic teaches South End sluggers

A baseball camp for youths 8 to13 years old is for all players, from the aspiring to the elite. The camp will be at South Whidbey Community Park Baseball Field 1 Aug. 8-11.

Instructor Steve Goucher is a former professional baseball player and Atlanta Braves scout.

Players work on hitting, throwing, fielding, games and scrimmages.

Limited needs-based scholarships are available.

The camp runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 8 to Thursday, Aug. 11 and costs $129. Advance registration is required. Visit www.swparks.org or call 221-5484 to register.
