South Whidbey takes a walk on the wild side / Baseball

It was a walk in the park — make that ballpark — for the South Whidbey High School baseball team as the Falcons strolled by host Sultan 11-2 Thursday, April 4.

Turk pitchers combined to issue 17 bases on balls, seven which came around to score. In contrast, South Whidbey received a solid pitching performance from Alex Black, who tossed six innings and allowed four hits, one walk and one hit batter while striking out 8. Nick Young pitched a 1-2-3 seventh in relief.

The two teams wrap up their three-game series at 4 p.m. Friday, April 1, in Langley.

Sultan (0-5, 0-10) jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Kobe Koehler touched Black for a home run.

The Falcons matched the run in the top of the second. Young walked and was plated on singles by Ashton Leland and Black.

South Whidbey (7-1, 10-1) took the lead in the third with a pair of runs on a walk to Luke Rookstool, hits by Ethan Petty and Leland and a passed ball.

The Falcons padded their lead with two more runs in the fourth. Nick Black singled and Kody Newman walked, and they scored on a passed ball and fielder’s choice.

After Sultan scored in the bottom of the fourth, Petty walked in the top of the fifth and scored on Nick Flaherty’s sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.

South Whidbey put the game away with a five-run fifth.

With one out, Rookstool and Young singled then four walks and a hit batter followed.

Leland finished with three hits; Alex Black, Nick Black, Dexter Jokinen, Rookstool and Petty added singles.
