Swegler Richmond wins steeplechase at Holder Relays / Track

Five South Whidbey middle- and long-distance track athletes competed in the 25-team Holder Relays at Yakima’s Davis High School Saturday, March 30.

Sophomore Kaia Swegler Richmond won the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:37.47, the best high school time in the event in Washington this spring and 10th-best nationally.

The steeplechase is rarely run in high school meets, and this was only Swegler Richmond’s third time running the event.

Junior Michael Cepowski ran the boys steeplechase, taking ninth (7:06.65).

Callahan Yale placed third in the 400 in a personal best 53.13, and he was 13th in the 1,600 in a season best 4:45.07. Cooper Ullmann took 18th in the 1,600 (4:59.09).

Luc Gandarias finished 18th in the freshman/sophomore 800 with a PR of 2:35.94.
