First week of first drive nets $61.60 for Christmas fund
“The warm-hearted generosity of Whidbey Island residents was evidenced this past week when several responded to the plea for donations to a children’s fund established for the first time this year by the Whidbey Record and the South Whidbey Good Cheer club.
“As of Wednesday evening, a total of $61 had been donated toward a brighter Christmas for South Whidbey’s youngsters who might otherwise be left out on Our Saviour’s Birthday.
“Since the first annual fund drive has been publicized only one time in the Record we are highly pleased at the response thus far and know that the success of the first drive, as measured by happy children, has already been assured.”
Heavy fog results in two accidents
“Heavy fog Saturday night and early Sunday morning caused two accidents within an hour and Al Heggenes of Clinton was involved as a passenger in both of them.
“State Trooper George Metcalf said the first accident occurred about 11:45 p.m. Saturday. Robin Burley, 19, of Clinton missed a turn at Double Bluff and ran into an old resort cabin. The cabin was knocked some three feet off its foundation and his car, a 1953 Ford coupe, was totaled. Neither Robin nor Al were hurt.
“After Robin’s wreck, Al got into a car driven by Dick Scriven, 19, of Langley for a ride to his brother’s house. On the way, about 12:30 p.m., Dick failed to negotiate a curve and ran into a power line guy pole on Lancaster Road at Mutiny Bay. His 1955 Ford had an estimated $150 damage but again, neither the driver nor the passenger were hurt.”
Clinton auction success; nearly $900 in profits
“Items which varied from a pickup truck to a small box of tools were auctioned at prices which ranged from $64 to 15 cents Sunday at an auction held in Clinton to raise money for the new Clinton hall.
“A total of more than $885 was spent by the large crowd of auction buffs which gathered in the old hall most of the afternoon. Thanks to the generosity of Islanders who donated the materials for the auction, all of the proceeds represent net profit to be used toward completion of the hall. “
