Island Recycling will no longer take CFL bulbs, tubes

Island Recycling will no longer accept florescent light bulbs. The change started Friday for the Freeland business. Owner Jill Campbell said new regulations require that florescent lights, both CFL bulbs (the squiggly kind) and tubes, must be disposed of at hazardous waste facilities, such as Island County’s Bayview station on Highway 525 or its Coupeville landfill.

Surprisingly, perhaps, a lot of bulbs go quietly into that dark night in Freeland. Campbell said Island Recycling has seen its fair share of drop-offs.

“We get lots and lots of them,” she said.

Campbell said the business is posting signs to alert customers.
