Letter: City of Oak Harbor leaders have dubious priorities

I just finished reading the Aug. 24 letter from Terry Lacey and I agree 100 percent.

People who work for the town or county are well paid and do not normally deserve bonuses. The money could be well~spent elsewhere.

Oak Harbor is a mini Washington D.C. run by Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi wannabes. Spend as much as you can as fast as you can on questionable projects such as the water treatment plant, pretty Pioneer Way the city park and silly artwork.

Now they are considering spending $700,000 dollars repairing a pier that almost no one uses. What’s next, parking meters?

There are many people in Oak Harbor suffering from financial problems, not counting the homeless, the unemployed, the folks who have lost their leases and the people who are trying to survive with $15 an hour with no benefits.

My son is one of them. He moved to Oak Harbor almost three years ago and has not found a single good paying job with benefits. Maybe that’s because he is not retired Navy or knows anyone in the city council or the school system.

He lost his last job due to Covid and the high inflation (he was laid off) but cannot get unemployment because the office manager lied to the unemployment office and told them he quit. Who owns a house and quits his job knowing there are no new jobs available?

Terry Lacey also mentioned taxes. I have an idea. Instead of using taxes paid by retired folks or people with no children in the school system just charge a tuition for each child, that way renters will have to pay for their own kids education

Utility rates are also on the high side. I pay monthly for yard waste and recycling, which I rarely use more than once a month and believe it or not I pay or rainwater that lands in my driveway Our streets and sidewalks are in terrible shape but I guess the city council does not consider that important enough.

Sad to say, but the same fools in office will probably get elected again. Some folks (the voters) just never learn
