Letter: Mask up for the safety of those on the front line

Editor,

I was checking out groceries at Safeway on Tuesday. The clerk took a moment to take a sip of water. He was clearly, extremely agitated and looked like he was ready to walk out.

I asked him what was bothering him. He told me that he was frustrated with wearing a mask since it was obvious that almost no one else in the store was wearing one. He felt that his health was threatened.

Unfortunately, he was right. With the Delta variant surging on Whidbey Island, the management of Safeway is remiss in not requiring masks while shopping at the store.

Secondly, why do so many people feel so privileged as to not wear a mask to protect themselves, their families, friends, neighbors and those that serve them on a daily basis?
