Letter: Sons of American Revolution focus is on patriotism

Editor,

Regarding the article on the front page of the Whidbey News-Times regarding the flag retirement ceremony with the Sea Cadets — they are great and the event was shared with the Sons of the American Revolution.

FYI, Sons of American Revolution, or SAR, is a male lineage society that perpetuates the ideals from our War of Independence in 1775. We are a historical, educational and patriotic nonprofit corporation. We seek to maintain and expand the meaning of patriotism, respect for our national symbols, the value of American citizenship and the unifying force of “epluribus Unum,” that our country was created from the people of many nations, one nation and one people.

To become a member, a man needs to have a genealogical link back through the generations linking him to an ancestor who served in the War of Independence. Veterans are very important to us.

I am proud of this organization.
