LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Vote a big no on luxury items

To the editor:

Killing the goose that lays the golden egg. In this case, the geese are the homeowners and taxpayers who are asked to pay for a community sports complex to the tune of over $15 million. This sports complex will have indoor and outdoor swimming pools, an indoor tennis court and God knows what else! Also, there is an $8 million makeover for the Langley Marina, which only a few boat owners will use.

Of course, they say it’s only a few dollars per $1,000 of your home value.

I’ve been on the island for over 16 years and my house taxes have gone up every year due to some extent to that only a few dollars per $1,000 of house value! It’s to the point where I have to borrow money to pay my house taxes.

In these uncertain times, with the economy as bad as it is, I think it’s unreasonable to ask the homeowner to pay for these luxury items. Good common sense says “Vote a big no” on the luxury sports complex and the Langley Marina.

And don’t forget there is a $20 million school bond coming up that we will be asked to pay for.

So tighten your belts, folks, and look for that money tree.

Good luck, and have a nice day!
