LETTER TO THE EDITOR | Whidbey waterfront ‘Viewpoint’ belonged on front page

To the editor:

With Whidbey Island’s hundreds of waterfront homes, I feel the information in the Record’s “Viewpoint” article by Mac McDowell May 18 should be a front page news item.

No homeowner should be denied the right to rebuild their home if damaged regardless of how much damage, even totalled!

Restrictions on new buildings easily fall under the scrutiny of the Ecology Department, but too many homes were built long before lot sizes were increased.

All waterfront homeowners should follow Mac’s advice and write to Mr. Pater at the Department of Ecology as well as county commissioners as no one knows when a disaster could hit.

To be refused the right to rebuild is senseless, making people homeless and perhaps facing bankruptcy.
