A trustworthy and time-tested philosophical principle (“Occam’s Razor”) states that a simple solution is more likely to be correct than a complex one. In other words, to explain why things are the way they are, one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

Could the president’s puzzling kowtowing to Vladimir Putin be explained by applying that principle? And why does Donald Trump continue to stonewall disclosure of his income tax returns? The answer to both questions is because he can’t let it be known that his business and personal loans are co-signed by Russian oligarchs who work for Putin and to whom Trump is beholden.
