Letter: What is the impact of ships on marine life?

Editor,

I am very concerned with the increasing frequency of huge container ships being moored for multiple days in the Holmes Harbor/Baby Island area.

We live in an area of great natural beauty with varied marine and other wildlife and my concern is that whether intentionally or accidentally there may be some sort of spill from these ships, sewage, garbage or, worst of all, a fuel spill.

I am also concerned with the potential effect on our resident Orcas from the 24-hour-a-day low rumble of the engines which may affect their ability to feed in this area.

If you share my concerns, please do not remain silent. I have sent e-mails to the Island County commissioners for our district, The whale research center in Friday Harbor and the Northwest Seaport Alliance but have yet to hear back from any of them.
