Editor,
As we start a new year, I had hoped to share only good news and excitement, but it’s hard to ignore the challenges many are facing. From the violence that has shaken our country to the devastation of the wildfires in Los Angeles, it’s clear that so many are in pain.
My heart goes out to everyone affected by these fires, especially as we know so many in our Whidbey Island community have loved ones in the LA area. If you feel moved to help, there are several ways to contribute to relief efforts, such as donating to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, California Community Foundation Wildfire Recovery Fund, or the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region.
While it’s difficult to imagine such a disaster striking Whidbey Island, I can easily picture how our community would come together. We have always been a resilient, caring place, and with each passing year, I’m inspired by how much stronger we grow. Last year, Whidbey’s generosity was on full display, with 259 donors who made 555 donations totaling more than $2.1 million in donations to and through the Whidbey Community Foundation. This level of giving, along with the countless hours of volunteer work, shows just how deeply committed we are to supporting each other.
I’m truly grateful to be part of this amazing community. And I’m excited to work with our Board of Directors on strategic visioning and prioritization this year to ensure we are aligning our resources in the best way possible and amplifying the impact of our generous community.
I wish you a year filled with warmth, adventure, and moments of joy, wherever you may find them. Thank you for being part of this wonderful community that makes Whidbey Island such a special place.
